Custom Home Design & Construction Process

Experience the efficiency and transparency of our tried-and-true construction process.
From initial concept to project completion, we ensure a smooth and successful journey.

Step 1

Initial Conversation

Our process begins with an introductory conversation to get to know each other. We ask questions and listen to understand your vision, priorities, thoughts, and concerns about the custom home building or renovation process. We will provide information on our Scherrer home-building team and answer your questions.

Step 2

Site Evaluation // Land Selection

Are you seeking land to build your dream home? We assist clients in finding the right property and work with those who already own their building property. In both cases, we will guide you through site evaluation, including soil testing, survey work, site utility evaluation, municipal approval planning, tree removal, existing home razing, and conceptual design.

Step 3

Architectural Design

Whether you have completed architectural plans or are seeking assistance with your custom home design, we are here to partner with you throughout the architectural design process. We believe in a collaborative process involving an architect, interior designer, engineers, and our building team centered around you, our client.

Step 4

Building Product Selections

We will assist you in selecting key components for your home, including appliances, plumbing fixtures, flooring, roofing, and exterior veneer materials, that will affect your overall budget. If you choose to work with an interior designer, we are available to make recommendations or work with your interior design partner. If you choose not to work with an interior designer for your home project, our team is available to assist with your selections.

Step 5

Competitive Bid Process

We'll assist you in preparing your bid documents by organizing your architectural plans, survey, grading plan, and specifications. We'll include your initial product selections in the bid specifications to ensure that our estimate meets your specific expectations and isn't based on generic allowances.

For over 95 years, our company has been constructing homes in Wisconsin, forging long-standing relationships with the industry's highest-quality trade partners. We collaborate across trade partners to achieve an optimal balance of quality, service, and value.

During the competitive bid process, a detailed budget estimate and scope of work are created and shared for your approval. This allows you to have a clear understanding of everything that is included in the project, as well as any items that are not included. This helps avoid any surprises during the construction process.

Step 6

Construction Process

Our construction management team will provide regular updates on project progress, including any changes in schedule, budget, or scope of work. We use Primavera P6 scheduling software to schedule projects and Procore construction management software. Procore is an excellent tool for managing budgets, sharing site photos, providing weekly updates, and documenting selections and approvals.

Scherrer's internal team of skilled craftsmen provides us with a competitive advantage, resulting in superior quality work delivered on schedule to our valued clients. We can perform concrete work, masonry, rough carpentry, and finish carpentry in-house, allowing us to maintain greater control over project quality and schedules.

Your construction team will consist of an experienced project manager, site superintendent, and project coordinator. This team proactively manages scheduling, quality control, and budget.

Step 7

Post Construction

We stand by our work and want to ensure you are completely satisfied with the long term performance of your home.

Our commitment to you does not end when your home is completed. We will follow up on any unfinished items on the punch list shortly after you take occupancy of your home, and also manage any necessary warranty work at the one-year mark.
